Then a software bug took down large parts of AWS: two programs tried to write the same DNS record at the same time, the record ended up empty, and several services subsequently spun out of control. Some of the world's largest companies watched their applications fail and could do little more than wait while engineers searched for the cause. Containing tech sprawl is what frees up room for AI.
The incident shows what happens when too many third-party dependencies come together. They cannot be avoided entirely. But the uncontrolled growth of tools, services, and environments, known as tech sprawl, is a real operational risk and a serious security challenge. Why consolidation is harder than expected
Many IT and security leaders have long since declared platform consolidation a strategic priority. On top of that comes a blind spot: most companies run more SaaS applications than they realize.

The rise of AI has made data quality one of the most pressing challenges. At the same time, the pressure to prove the value of every single SaaS application is growing: according to Cloudflare's 2026 application innovation report, 72 percent of leading companies attribute their expected budget adjustments to AI adoption.
The hidden costs of sprawl
A bloated tech stack causes costs that never appear on any license invoice:
- Security risks: Every additional third-party platform enlarges the attack surface. Employees reuse passwords across accounts, multiple vendors have access to company data, and a single provider's mistake can hit the entire ecosystem. When things go wrong, there is often little to do but wait for the third party to fix it.
- Wasted money and lost time: Duplicate licenses, unused seats, forgotten environments from old projects, and poorly designed workloads add up. According to Forrester, almost three out of four IT decision-makers say their company exceeded its cloud budget for the fiscal year.
- Declining productivity: Developers and security teams lose time and focus through constant context switching between complex systems. Anyone bogged down in maintenance tasks is more likely to take shortcuts in code, and that creates new technical debt.
Tech sprawl does not appear overnight, and it does not disappear overnight either. The solution is long-term by design: fewer vendors, fewer tools, one unified platform.
Five steps to consolidation

- Adopting trend tools unvetted: Experiments are good; fads consume resources without adding value. What matters is which concrete problems a tool solves in your own company. You learn the most by sitting down next to the teams and watching them work.
