Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7

Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 are the latest WLAN generations. Wi-Fi 6E extends Wi-Fi 6 with the 6 GHz band: plenty of new, low-interference spectrum used only by modern devices. Wi-Fi 7 (IEEE 802.11be) goes further — with channels up to 320 MHz wide, more efficient modulation (4K-QAM) and multi-link operation, where devices use several bands simultaneously.

For companies, the marketing peak rate matters less than behaviour under load: more concurrent clients per area, more stable latency for real-time applications, less interference in dense environments.

What do the new standards deliver in practice?

The 6 GHz band decongests busy radio environments: offices with many clients, production floors with sensors, event areas. Wi-Fi 7 additionally improves reliability — multi-link operation keeps connections across two bands in parallel, smoothing latency spikes for voice, AR scenarios or terminal operations.

The prerequisite is a well-designed overall system: access points with adequate uplinks (multi-gigabit switching, sufficient PoE budget), radio planning for the 6 GHz band with its shorter range — and client devices that support the standards at all.

What matters during rollout

  • Replan coverage: 6 GHz reaches shorter than 5 GHz — more cells, different placement.
  • Check infrastructure: switch uplinks and PoE must carry the new access points.
  • Analyse the client fleet: the benefit grows with the share of modern devices.
  • Bring security along: WPA3 is mandatory in the 6 GHz band.

What is the difference between Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7?

Wi-Fi 6E is Wi-Fi 6 plus the 6 GHz band — new spectrum, same technology. Wi-Fi 7 is the next generation: wider channels up to 320 MHz, 4K-QAM and multi-link operation across several bands at once. In short: 6E brings room, 7 brings room plus efficiency and stability.

Is switching to Wi-Fi 7 already worth it?

For new deployments or an upcoming lifecycle: yes, the devices are backwards compatible and future-proof. An early swap pays off mainly where dense usage, real-time applications or modern clients make the difference noticeable.

Do Wi-Fi 7 access points need new switches?

Often yes: for the radio performance to arrive, access points need multi-gigabit uplinks (2.5 or 5 Gbps) and sufficient PoE power. Switch infrastructure therefore belongs in every WLAN modernisation — otherwise the cable slows down the wireless.

Do old devices keep working in the new WLAN?

Yes — the standards are backwards compatible, older clients connect as usual on 2.4 and 5 GHz. Only suitably equipped devices benefit from the 6 GHz band and Wi-Fi 7 features; the existing fleet continues in parallel.

Why is WPA3 mandatory at 6 GHz?

The standard prescribes modern security without legacy in the 6 GHz band: WPA3 and protected management frames are mandatory, old methods are not allowed there. That simplifies the security posture — but requires clients that support WPA3.
