Accelerating SD-WAN Rollouts: Automation via the Dashboard API
Setting up a new company network at one site is routine. Doing the same at fifty, two hundred, or two thousand sites is a project, and with manual click-through configuration an error-prone one at that. Cloud-managed network platforms come with a tool for this that is often underestimated in rollout projects: a full-featured dashboard API. Accelerating rollouts is mostly a question of automation.
Automation instead of click work
Through a REST API with JSON, every building block of a site network can be created programmatically: organizations and administrators, networks and devices, plus DHCP, LAN, port forwarding, and uplink settings. What is otherwise configured by hand at each site is handled by a script: identical, repeatable, and free of typos. A real-world example from the Cisco Meraki blog shows how much leverage this offers: a retailer rolled out cellular gateways at more than 2,000 sites and drastically reduced the effort per site.
Templates and cloning
The second accelerator is templates: a reference branch is set up cleanly once and then cloned via the API. New sites take over the configuration in minutes and stay consistent, because changes are maintained centrally in the template instead of individually at each site.
Visibility included
The API also helps after the rollout: connectivity and signal strength can be queried continuously and integrated into your own dashboards or your existing monitoring. Latency and jitter problems become visible before they end up in a support ticket. That shortens troubleshooting considerably.
What this means for the rollout
Thinking API-first changes the economics of a WAN rollout: effort no longer grows linearly with the number of sites, quality stays constant, and the team focuses on exceptions instead of routine.
KAEMI uses exactly this kind of automation in SD-WAN projects: site provisioning, templates, and monitoring run script-driven as part of our managed service. For an overview, see our page on Software Defined WAN .
